Problem-Based Learning: From Ideas to Solutions through Communication
You are invited to participate in a three-day introductory ITUE session. This workshop will demonstrate problem-based learning (PBL) and model ways that PBL can be used effectively in all disciplines, in upper and lower division courses, and in all size classes. One focus of this program will be writing effective problem-based materials; participants will leave the session with new or revised problems for use in their couses. Another focus will be engaging students in research and communication as part of the process of PBL.
For additional information, please refer to Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education. If you are interested in participating in this session, please register early so that we may reserve seats accordingly. (The number of participants will be limited to about 60.) The registration fee is $595 for off-campus participants.  The fee is reduced to $495 for payment and registration received in advance of May 28.  Note: there is NO registration fee required for UD faculty and staff members.

It addresses its purpose and role in the academic job search process. Sample teaching statements are reviewed. This session is most appropriate for graduate students who are getting ready to go on the academic job search.

"Memorization Versus Understanding: Are We Teaching the Right Thing?"
Dr. Eric Mazur, Harvard University
Dr. Eric Mazur, Balkanski Professor of Physics and Applied Physics from Harvard University, will visit our campus as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholars Program. In addition to his important contributions to optical physics, Dr. Mazur devotes time to finding ways to improve science education. This research has led to the publication of Peer Instruction, a manual that offers methods for teaching large lecture classes interactively.
Recipient of the National Science Foundation Director's Award to Distinguished Teaching Scholars, he is a fellow of the American Physical Society and was chosen the Society's Centennial Lecturer.

Promotion and Tenure at Delaware: A Workshop Open to All Faculty
A faculty panel will address critical issues pertaining to promotion to Associate Professor: Preparing for the promotion process; putting the dossier together and the role of external reviewers; addressing promotion and tenure policies and procedures most effectively.  The panel will be followed by roundtable discussions focusing on: Navigating the internal P&T process; navigating the external P&T process; compiling the teaching portion of the dossier; working around perceived challenges; and advice and resources for promotion to full professor.
Participants will receive a complementary copy of Bob Diamond's (2004) bestseller, Preparing for promotion, tenure, and annual review, A faculty guide for their reference.

The World as Classroom: Developing a Study Abroad Proposal
Thinking about developing a new winter or summer session study abroad program? Then please join us for an introductory "how-to" session. You will hear a panel of experienced study abroad directors share ideas on topics such as program site selection, academic considerations, itinerary planning, recruitment of specific student groups, and characteristics of a successful director. Staff from the Center for International Studies will guide the discussion, present the proposal process, and provide feedback on your ideas for new programs. Lisa Chieffo will be the facilitator.

Creating a Livable Delaware: Pathways for Enhancing Prosperity with Quality of Life
The daylong conference will feature a keynote address by William B. Chandler III, chancellor of the Delaware Court of Chancery, on “Posing the Challenge of Creating a Livable Delaware,” and a luncheon address by Richard E. Killingsworth, executive director of The Harvest Foundation, on “Creating a Healthy Delaware.” The day also will include panel discussions on “Strengthening Local Economies,” “Enhancing Delaware's Heritage” and “Building and Financing Delaware's Infrastructure.”
The series aims to engage university, government and business leaders in the challenges and opportunities for partnership and to highlight opportunities for enhanced future partnerships.

This two-day course for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will explore current issues in the responsible conduct of research. Participants may register for the entire seminar or for individual modules. Each module will have a separate non-credit course number, and participation will be noted on a student's transcript. Students completing all four of the modules will receive a certificate of completion.

Enhancing Your Powerpoint Presentations Seminar
This seminar will focus on two of the key components of a well-delivered classroom presentation: preparing and planning content and the effective use of PowerPoint. During the seminar, attendees will learn about tools for preparing classroom PowerPoint presentations, including storyboarding, mind mapping, and outlining. Participants will receive specific PowerPoint guidelines and techniques, including dos, don'ts, and concrete examples of each. More information.
