This session will introduce techniques on how to effectively organize and manage all of the responsibilities that are concurrent with being a graduate student and a teaching assistant (TA). The session will include a panel discussion with senior graduate students followed by application of time management activities aimed to help you organize your time more efficiently. The goal of this session is to provide graduate students with practical, feasible ways to get a handle on juggling academic work, personal life, and other commitments.
Graduate Student Panelists: Brad Bauer, Chemistry & Biochemistry; Kel Hannum, Civil & Environmental Engineering; Lauren Miltenberger, Urban Affairs & Public Policy; Michelle Oswald, Civil & Environmental Engineering
- Panel discussion with current graduate students who have real stories, and real failures to discuss…and how they learned from these mistakes to make improvements when planning out their academic work.
- Suggestions on how to complete all of the tasks that go along with being a TA, including time saving tips on how to grade exams and papers, and going beyond the list – how to make sure all of your commitments are completed on time without lists that are ineffective.
- How to set realistic goals and objectives that reflect your current workload, including your research, teaching, as well as academic responsibilities and degree requirements.
- Discussion of how to find the right balance between studies, work, and home responsibilities, along with the benefits of relaxing and taking time out for yourself!
